5 Simple Steps to Create a Budget That Actually Works
Think Budgeting is Hard? Let’s Simplify It.
Creating a budget doesn’t have to feel like a chore. In fact, with the right steps, it can be one of the most empowering things you do for yourself. The key is to build a budget that works for YOUR life, not someone else’s.
Here’s how to create a budget that’s simple, effective, and realistic.
Step 1: Track Your Income
Start by writing down all the money you bring in each month. This includes:
- Your main job.
- Side hustles or freelance work.
- Any other sources of income (e.g., child support or rental income).
Knowing your total income is the foundation of your budget—it’s your starting point. Use the “Income” section of my FREE Budget Planner to organize everything in one place.
Step 2: Categorize Your Expenses
Next, list all your expenses. Divide them into two categories:
- Fixed Expenses: These are consistent monthly costs like rent, insurance, or subscriptions.
- Variable Expenses: These change month-to-month, like groceries, dining out, or transportation.
Having these categories helps you see where your money is going and where you might need to adjust.
Step 3: Set Realistic Goals
What are you working toward? Whether it’s saving for a vacation, building an emergency fund, or paying off debt, your goals should guide your budget.
Write down your goals in the “Savings” section of the planner and break them into achievable steps. For example, if you want to save $1,000 in six months, you’d need to save about $167 per month.
Step 4: Plan for Savings
This step is critical. Pay yourself first by setting aside money for savings before allocating the rest. Even if it’s just $50 a month, starting small can lead to big results over time.
Step 5: Review and Adjust Regularly
Your budget isn’t set in stone. Life happens—expenses change, incomes fluctuate. Review your budget monthly to see what’s working and what’s not. Use this time to celebrate your progress and adjust as needed.
